ARC 2009
Australian Red Cross (ARC) - Padang (Indonesia) Earthquake Recovery
In September 2009, the city of Padang, in West Sumatra, was hit by a major earthquake which killed over a thousand people, and destroyed thousands of families' homes in the city and surrounding countryside. Australian Red Cross helped the survivors in many ways, but particularly got me to photograph the results of their Shelter program. Over 500 homeless families were helped to build a simple, safe house. These provide a decent place to live while each family starts the long process of rebuilding their permanent home.
I loved being able to photograph people at work. The spirit of survival and community help is very strong, and the local people's character showed through everywhere.
